3.Simmond’s Disease



Definition

It is a condition characterised by decreased function of the anterior pituitary gland. 

Aetiology

1.It is seen in adults.

2.Male>female.

3.It is due to any of the following conditions:-

              .Tumour of the pituitary gland.

               .Necrosis of the pituitary gland.

                .Surgical removal of the pituitary gland.

 

Clinical features

1.There is weakness and loss of weight.

2.The patient has premature senility.

3.The skin is dry and wrinkled, especially on the face.

4.Anaemia is present.

5.Features of hypothyroidism are present.

6.Features of hypoadrenalism are present.

7.Axillary and pubic hair are absent.

8.Sexual function is decreased or lost.

           .Cessation of menstruation in women.

            .Loss of libido.

            .Impotence in men.

Treatment

1.Thyroid hormones.

2.Cortisone.

3.Female sex hormones to a female patient.

4.Testosterone to a male patient.

5.Treatment of pituitary tumour as same.
