RABIES
(HYDROPHOBIA)
It occurs in dogs and is transmitted to man by bite
of infected dog. Occasionally it occurs in cat .
Causative organism
Rabies virus is responsible for rabies
Mode of transmission
Direct contact of virus in saliva of a rabid animal
into a bite or scratch
Incubation period
3 to 8 weeks
Symptoms
1. Malaise
2. Fatigue
3. Headache
4. Fever
5. Paralysis
6. Hydrophobia
7. Convulsion
8. Delirium
Complication
Almost invariably progress to death
Diagnosis
1. Blood
test

Prevention
Best controlled through prevention rather treatment
. high dose of passive rabies immunoglobulin . people with dog bite must be given vaccine without delay .

NURSING MANAGEMENT
1. Bites
with animals should be thoroughly
flushed and cleaned with soap and water.
2. Pain
killers to relive pain should be given to patient as order of doctor.
