STERNUM

STERNUM :

1.      Sternum is also called as Breast bone.
2.      Sternum is about 15 cm long and it is a flat , narrow bone located in the center of the anterior thoracic wall.
3.      Sternum is divided into 3 parts .
v  Manubrium : its handle like superior part
v  The body : it is middle and largest part
v  Xiphoid process : it is sword shaped inferior smallest and terminal part.
4.      The segments of the sternum typically fuse by age 25 to form transverse ridges at the points of fusion.
5.      The sternal angle is the junction of manubrium and body and the suprasternal notch is the depression on the superior surface of manubrium.
6.      Clavicular notches form sternoclavicular joints with the medial ends of the clavicles.
7.      The manubrium also articulates with the costal cartilages of the first and second ribs.
8.      The body of the sternum articulates directly or indirectly with the costal cartilages of the second to tenth ribs.
9.      Xiphoid process is hyaline cartilage during infancy and childhood and completely ossifies by about age 40.
10.  It provides attachment for some abdominal muscles.
11.  Thoracic surgeons may split the sternum along the midline and then hold the halves together with wire sutures after surgery.
12.  During cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR),  the rescuer may fracture the xiphoid process driving it into internal organs.
