v The
clavicle is a long bone which has a double curve.
v Clavicle
or collar bone is slender, S shaped and lies horizontally across the anterior
part of the thorax superior to the first rib.
v The
edial or sternal end is rounded and articulates with the manubrium of the
sternum .
v The
broad flat lateral end articulates with the acromion of the scapula.
v Conoid
ligament attaches to the conoid tubercle on the inferior surface of the lateral
end.
v There
is impression for the costoclavicular ligament
on the inferior surface of the sternal end.
v It
articulates with the manubrium of the sternum at the sternoclavicular joint and
forms the acromioclavicular joint with
the acromion process of the scapula.
v The
clavicle provides the only bony link between the upper limb and the axial
skeleton.
v The
clavicle is one of the most frequently broken bones in the body.
v The
clavicular mid region is the most
frequent fracture site because the junction of the two curves is the weakest
point of clavicle.
v Even
compression of the clavicle often causes damage to the median nerve lying
between the clavicle and the second rib.
v A
fractured clavicle is usually treated with a regular sling to keep the arm from
moving outward.
