Polycythemia

It is a rare disorder characterized by an increase in the haemoglobin level and  RBC count above the normal range.

 

Aetiology

1.Congenital cyanotic heart disease.

2.Chronic pulmonary disease.

3.Chronic heart disease.

4.Polycythemia vera.

 

Investigations

1.Haemogram:High Hb,high RBC count.

2.Investigations for the aetiological condition:Discussed in respective chapters.

 

Treatment

1.Treatment of the cause.

2.Periodic removal of the patient’s blood to lower the Hb level.

3.Radioactive phosphorous:It destroys RBCs.
