Flatulence

Definition

It is a condition characterized by locking ofgas in bowel. It is also known as tympanites or meteorism.

Aetiology

1.Inadequate digestion of carbohydrates causes their fermentation in the gastrointestinal tract and formation of gas

2.If there are excessive proteins in diet, they do not get digested completely and decompose to form gas.

3.Indigestion.

4.Poor function of the bowel in old age causes flatulence.

5.Constipation causes locking of gas in the bowel.

 

Clinical features

1.Pain in abdomen.

2.Abdominal distention.

3.Borborygmi: It is a gurgling sensation in the abdomen, often audible, due to movement of bowel with gas locked within it.

4.Giddiness.

5.Headache.

6.Belching.

7.Constipation.

8.Abdomen cannot be compresses easily.

9.Tympanic note on percussion of the abdomen.

10.Difficulty in breathing due to pressure on the diaphragm by bowel distended with gas.

 

 Nursing measures

1.The cause of constipation is found out, because if it requires surgical treatment , it must be given in time and general nursing measures are unlikely to be useful.

2.Abdominal hot fomentation is done.

3.Turpentine stupe is given.

4.Flatus tube is passed to remove gas from the colon.

5.Carminative enema is given if there is constipation.
