Care
of rubber goods:
All rubber goods must be
cleaned, dried and put in cool place. The rubber goods should be prevented from
direct sunlight , so never dry under direct sun light.
Rubber goods are heat sensitive
hence they are not put in direct boiling water.
While
cleaning soap, detergents are thoroughly rinsed by plenty of water as residual
soap may damage the rubber articles.
Mackintosh or rubber sheet:
Wash
well with soap and water by placing them on flat surface from
both sides . dry them by hanging or wiping with dry cloth , avoid
putting them in strong sun light . once dried completely , put French chalk
powder on both surface , roll them and keep in dry cool place.
Catheters :
Clean
the
catheter with soap under running tap water . use stiletto to clean the inside
of tube if needed. Dry it by hanging, powder and store in container length
wise.
rectal tube:
remove
Vaseline
or lubricant well using plenty of soap and water , rinse and soak in Lysol 2%
for 20 minutes. Allow water to run the through the catheter till all organic
material is clean, then dry by hanging, dry and store in contained length wise.
Rubber
gloves: Wash both inside and outside with soap and water. boil
for 3 minute or soak in lysol2% for 20minutes wash gloves by using plenty of
water, dry both surfaces by hanging powder on both side, check for leakage and
fold and keep in glove bag/container.
Rubber
ring or Air cushion : wash
with soap and water . keep the valve closed so that water will not get inside.
dry well paying special attention to the valve so that they will not get rusty.
Powder the outside .inflate with air and store.
Ice
bags and hot water bags: Wash with soap and water, dry well,
invert without closing valve so that water can drain out. dry metal parts to
prevent rusting, powder only outside the bag, inflate and store
Sterilization
of rubber good : wash with soap and water , dry ell invert
without closing valve so that water can drain out. Dry metal parts to prevent
rusting, powder only outside the bag, Inflate and store.
Sterilization
of rubber goods : Rubber goods like rubber tubing drainage
tubes, catheters, and other tubes are sterilized by boiling for five minutes or
by autoclaving. while boiling special care is to be taken to keep all rubber
articles immersed in boiling water to prevent damages as well as to assure
sterilization .after use careful washing is necessary to remove all organic
material from rubber tubes is best clean by attaching tube to a pressure nozzle
of a cold water supply and forcing water through it.
The other rubber goods like rubber face masks of
anaesthesia equipment are washed in warm
water with detergents and then boiled for five minutes . chemical disinfection
should not be used because it cause skin irritation to the patients due to
absorbed disinfectants in rubber.
Gloves
Rubber gloves are sterilized by
autoclaving at a pressure of 15ibs for ten minutes . a starch powder is used to
powder the gloves. Today it is advisable to use single use gloves to minimize
the risk of cross infection .
Surgical
dressing and linen drapes
Cotton material like gauze, cotton ,wool, bandages are
autoclave in specific drums, where it is packed loosely.
7 Transportation
Of infected patient:
Purpose
To outline the appropriate
procedures for transporting potentially infectious patient:
Audience
All employees of UTMB hospitals , clients, victory
lakes outpatient specialty care and surgical center, contract workers ,
volunteers , and students policy.
· Category
specific barriers techniques shall be utilized for any patient in isolation
throughout their transportation in UTMB complex
· The
receiving area shall be notified of the patient category of isolation prior to
the patients arrival
· The
transporter shall be informed of the patients category of isolation prior to
the transport time
· The
standard precaution policy will be followed for contact with any and all blood
fluids. Nursing personnel or sending department
· Notify
the transportation department regarding all patients on isolation who require
transport. This should be done when telephoning the transportation department
to request transportation .
· Place
the notice on the front of the chart indicating the type of isolation the
patient requires
· Notify
the receiving area by telephone prior to transport of a patient on isolation .
transportation department.
· Follow
all isolation procedures for the type of isolation involved (see policy
:isolation)
· Transport
patient by the most direct routes to their destination . avoid contact with
employees and visitors as much as possible.
· Disinfect
wheelchair and stretchers with a hospital –grade disinfection after use
for a patient on isolation and prior to
returning the wheelchair / stretcher to service
· Cleaning
of wheelchair will be focused on the seat , arms , rest , and back rest. The metal portion of
the wheelchair will be inspected for contamination with blood and body fluids
and once ,removed all surface decontaminated with a hospital grade disinfection
· Cleaning
of the stretchers will focus on the upper and lower surface of the stretchers
pad. The metal portion of the stretchers will be inspected for contaminated
with blood and body fluids and once removed , all surfaces decontaminated with
a hospital grade disinfectant . transportation of patient on contact precaution
· Patient on contact precautions must be
transported on a stretcher or wheelchair covered with a sheet or other physical
barrier
· The
transporter should wear a gown and
gloves to assist the patient into and out of the wheelchair/stretcher . gowns and gloves are available on the
nursing unit.
· The
hands of the transporter should be washed
with an antimicrobial soap or an alcohol hand rub should be applied
after gloves are removed.
· Gowns&
gloves are not required during the transportation process transportation of patient on airborne or droplet precautions
· If
the patient is on airborne or droplet precautions, the patient shall be
transported earing a surgical mask. A
mask is not necessary for the transporter.
